Integrated Text Messaging
Total Activity Control now supports integrated text messaging to enable office staff to send messages such as work orders and driving directions to drivers’ cell phones. This integration will give order takers and service dispatchers an easy, inexpensive way to send important service route updates or new orders to their drivers. Text messages can be saved to the cell phone so that the driver can re-read the message and not have to remember or write down a service address. The driver can also reply to the email and verify receipt.
Most new cell phones can send and receive text messages. Text messaging can be enabled on cellular service accounts for a small fee, but each service varies, so plans need to be checked. Messages are usually limited to 100-200 characters. (A typical name and address will be 50-70 characters.) The Total Activity Control system will provide special short formats for work orders and other messages, and will store cell phone number emails for drivers. In order to stay within the limits of the cellular provider’s message limits, messages that are longer than 120 characters will be broken up into short text messages, to a maximum of 3 messages, or 360 characters.

A more complete list of U.S. and international carriers and their text message addresses and lengths can be found at the end of this article.
A typical scenario using this feature would be as follows:
1. Order taker creates a text message work order for a driver.
2. TAC dispatches the messages to the driver’s cell phone email.
3. The driver’s phone beeps that there is a message.
4. The driver reads the message and sends a reply to the order taker.
5. The order taker sees the reply in his/her email, confirming that the driver has the message.
6. When the driver completes the service, he sends another text message to the order taker by replying again to the first message.
7. The order taker now has a record that the driver has completed the service.
